Canada Skilled Worker Immigration Quota to Reset on July 1

Canada has the limited the number of foreign nationals who can apply for Canadian permanent residence under the Federal Skilled Worker class by fixing the maximum number of applications each year without requiring to obtain approved job offer from Canadian employers. The quota for the year 2012-2013 will be reset on July 1, 2012.

The maximum number of applications was 10,000 last year with a maximum cap of 500 for each eligible profession under the Federal Skilled worker class.

There are only two weeks left when the Citizenship and Immigration Canada will start accepting the applications, however, it is not clear yet that will there be any change in the eligible professions list or previous list will continue. For that reason, the applicants who are otherwise eligible and qualify to submit application are not certain if their profession will remain on the list or struck off of the list of eligible professions.

The other possible changes in the six selection factors that are expected to be introduced include age, experience, and language requirements.

There will also be new category for skilled trades persons for the Canadian permanent residence under the federal skilled worker class and that will be a significant change in the immigration programme. More trades persons will be able to take advantage of the Canadian federal skilled worker programme even though they have less years of education and lower language skills.

The entrepreneur programme that was put on halt last year for overhauling may still not be introduced from July 1, 2012. The Citizenship and Immigration Canada Minister Jason Kenney has indicated that he is planning to replace the entrepreneur programme with the start-up visa. However, the potential applicants will have to wait until it is opened for new applications.

The Minister Kenney has faced a setback in his attempt to eliminate the backlog of about 300,000 applications through legislation, however, Canadian Federal Court Judge ordered immigration department to process the application of the lead litigant.
