Sri Lanka has reportedly cancelled the visa on arrival facility for Pakistani passport holders with immediate effect. The measure is apparently taken to curb the increasing number of asylum seekers from Pakistan. Pakistani citizens now must first obtain Sri Lanka visa in Pakistan prior to their departure to the island nation.
It has been reported in the media that government of Sri Lanka has stopped the visa on arrival facility for Pakistani nationals due to rise in the number of people who were claiming refugee status after arrival.
Media reports indicate that that Sri Lankan authorities have arrested over 1500 Pakistani nationals who have claimed asylum and are registered with the UNHCR. The authorities suspect that these Pakistani were involved in anti state activities in India and Pakistan. Sri Lanka is making arrangements to deport them back to Pakistan.
Sri Lanka High Commission in Islamabad will issue more details about the visa process.
Pakistani nationals are among the nationals of those few countries who face the most restrictions when it comes to traveling to other countries of the world. Pakistan is almost at the bottom of the list along with Afghanistan and Somalia.
